The lengthy lines that can typically be seen at California Department of Motor Vehicles offices may become a thing of the past, now that new self-service terminals are being offered.

The DMV recently announced that 50 do-it-yourself kiosks have arrived at field offices throughout California — Hanford’s DMV office included. The terminals let drivers renew their registration or file for planned non-operation status without waiting in long lines.
“This is a great service,” DMV spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez said. “It’s really a very quick and simple way for people who want their tags that day.”
So how do the machines work?
Simply bring your annual renewal paperwork or your current registration card and follow the given directions. Within minutes a new registration card and sticker or planned non-operation acknowledgement are issued.
What the terminals cannot do is provide proof of insurance, pay registration reinstatement fees, change addresses or renew vehicle registration of vessels other than autos, motorcycles, pickups, commercial vehicles and coach and park model trailers. For those who require said services, using the DMV website or making an appointment is suggested.
