Google Buys Rights to .App Top-Level Domain

Google wants it so Google gets it. From PCMag.

Excerpt:

Google prevailed in ICANN’s public auction for the top-level domain, paying just a hair over $25M for the rights to .app. It’s reportedly the highest purchase price yet paid for a top-level domain in an ICANN auction. It was more more than triple the price of the previous record-holder, Dot Tech LLC and its $6.8 million winning bid this past September for the rights to .tech.

“The mission of the proposed gTLD, .app, is to provide a dedicated domain space for application developers. The term ‘app’ is associated with a wide variety of applications, including mobile applications, web- and browser-based applications, cloud-hosted applications and even desktop applications,” reads the top-level domain application from Charleston Road Registry, Google’s registry services company.

Texas advocate helped mold Americans with Disabilities Act

Houston professor Lex Frieden played a key role in the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. On the law’s 25th anniversary, Frieden, who has used a wheelchair for decades, reflects on sweeping changes in accessibility – and challenges that remain.

Source: www.kgns.tv

A 1967 head-on car crash left Frieden paralyzed from the shoulders down. An 18-year-old freshman at Oklahoma State University, he found himself in a wheelchair on a campus where stairs were an impossible barrier and sidewalks were just beyond reach. He dropped out of school.

Later, he sought to continue his education at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, but he was rejected because he used a wheelchair, he said.

“When I got the letter, I thought it was a mistake,” Frieden said. “That hurt a lot worse than the broken neck. That was the first time I understood discrimination and the civil rights movement I had seen growing up. People making decisions based on characteristics over which someone has no control.”

He went to the University of Tulsa instead. Armed with a psychology degree, Frieden moved to Texas. He pursued a master’s degree at the University of Houston, where he met his wife, Joyce, who also uses a wheelchair.

Last week, Google bought Softcard for an undisclosed sum. The biggest plus for GOOG? All three major carriers will pre-install Google Wallet on their Android devices. With google wallet all of the carriers had refused to play nice so this is a big change and should give AAPL fans some caution.

The deal, which builds on work MasterCard and Cubic are already doing with the Chicago and London transit systems, is intended to carve away at the $200 billion in city transit fares that are paid in cash. It’s also designed to simplify transit use for riders, who will be able to use the same app in multiple cities around the world, the companies said.

Detroit plans parking system using license plate technology

Detroit plans to roll out a parking system that uses technology tied to license plates in an effort to improve enforcement efficiency and increase options for payment.

Source: www.newsobserver.com

The technology allows drivers to access a kiosk, enter in their license plate number and park in any space within a specific zone. Coins, credit cards or debit cards may be used for payment at kiosks and parking time may be purchased via mobile app or by phone.

“The overarching goal is to write less tickets, to give people every opportunity to feed the meter so they do not get a ticket and to spur economic development,” Brown said. “This system we know will produce less tickets because you are going to have more options to pay the meter.”

At this stage, we are not certain of the extent of the breach, and are working around the clock to ensure a complete resolution.”

How Self-Service Kiosks Are Changing Customer Behavior

McDonalds isn’t the first fast food chain to consider giving customers more control over their orders using technology (though there’s a fair amount of debate about whether customization is really the best way forward for the struggling company). Many of its competitors have been experimenting with self-service apps and kiosks, finding that when customers use them, they tend to spend more money. Taco Bell recently announced that orders made via their new digital app are 20% pricier than those taken by human cashiers, largely because people select additional ingredients. Chili’s, after installing self-service tablets, reported a similar increase in dessert orders. Cinemark theater’s new self-service kiosks have “had concession spending per person climb for 32 straight quarters.”

Source: hbr.org

HBR talked with Ryan Buell, an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School, who studies the intersection of operations and customer behavior. It turns out that self-service technologies can pretty dramatically change what people do and how they act – though the research is hardly clear-cut on it being the best option for all businesses. An edited version of our conversation is below.

Outerwall – The Company Everyone Loves To Hate

We agreed with the overall consensus. Redbox and Coinstar are two businesses in secular decline, and we do not expect growth going forward. However, there’s a difference between businesses that are not growing and a business that’s going to die in the next 3 years.

Source: seekingalpha.com

We asked ourselves a simple question when we began due diligence on OUTR: Will the kiosk DVD rental business die within the next 5 years?

We concluded with “No,” and will explain our thinking throughout the article. After bypassing the initial conclusion, we began modeling out a share buyback pro forma statement. And from what we can tell you, we hope and pray every night that OUTR’s stock price never rises. We hope that it never rises for the next 5 years, as a matter of fact. Here is a snapshot of our conclusion as to why:

The future of health insurance retail stores

“This shift toward a consumer-centric model is going… to increase demand in brick-and-mortar retail stores,” said one expert.

Source: www.healthcaredive.com

What’s the return on investment?

Eggers says that retail stores are helping insurers serve three main priorities:

They serve as a sales channel for the growing numbers of individual purchasers.

They serve as a service location. “This is a great place to be able to service your customers in a meaningful way that engages them and creates accountability for them, and makes them happy—creating stickiness, so they stay with the insurer,” Eggers says.

They can also be a location for delivery of care. Eggers says that with the trend toward pushing more healthcare delivery down to second-tier providers, stores provide a very cost effective alternative to offices within hospitals, which have much higher fixed costs.

How to determine ROI can be difficult to answer and depends on how companies want to look at it.

“Could any of them actually put a hard financial ROI on them? We’ll see,” Eggers said.

“One could argue we’re five years from seeing a real ROI on these stores.”
