If you walk into Granby’s City Market in coming days you will notice a new kiosk just past the store’s interior doors and a series of signs reading “Scan, Bag, Go.”
Both the kiosk and the signs are part of a new shopping and payment system being set up at City Market and King Soopers stores across the nation. Granby’s City Market is one of 34 stores in Colorado where the new technology is being introduced this spring. Adam Williamson, corporate spokesman for City Market, said the Granby Scan, Bag, Go system is set to go operational on April 19.
“The one commodity that everyone wants is time,” Williamson said. “Once you are comfortable with this system the simplicity is nice. You scan as you go, bag as you go, and pay through either the app, if you have it set up, or pay through self checkout.”
Source: www.skyhinews.com
According to Williamson, shoppers will be able to utilize the system either through a downloadable app on their smart phones or via handheld scanning devices that will be provided by the store at the Scan, Bag, Go kiosk. Shoppers will be able to scan barcodes located on products or on the shelves where the product is located using the handheld devices or their phone’s camera.
After scanning an item the price will be logged on a shopper’s scanning device, which will show a running total of all items to be purchased. After shoppers have gathered all their desired items they will be able to pay either through their phone application or via the store’s self checkout lane.

The company specializes in IT hardware and software, and is a leading self-service kiosk manufacturer for major financial institutions in China. “Partnering with Inspur enhances our competitive position and deepens the relationship with our customers in China,” saidAndy W. Mattes, Diebold president and chief executive officer. “Inspur’s strong reputation as a leading China IT company with a global footprint allows our new joint venture to bring more innovative solutions to China’s financial institutions and strengthens Diebold’s go-to-market strategy in this important market. We look forward to re-igniting growth in China and are excited to work with Inspur to sell a complete suite of self-service products and related services.”
“We are very happy to enter into this venture with Diebold, a well-respected global leader in financial self-service solutions, to continue growing our own presence in this market in China,” said SUN Pishu, president and CEO of Inspur Group. “Inspur is one of the fastest-growing self-service technology providers in China. Combining both company’s technology, sales expertise and existing presence in China will be of great value, both to our clients and our respective businesses.”
Upon closing the agreement, Diebold will appoint a chairman of the new joint venture, while Inspur will appoint a chief executive officer for the business to lead day-to-day operations. The agreement is anticipated to be finalized in mid-2016, pending regulatory and other approvals, with plans to begin manufacturing and distribution activity immediately after regulatory approvals.
From McDonalds Experience of the Future to Panera 2.0, the restaurant industry is investing heavily in technology as a means of reducing costs and improving the dining experience.

Takeaways
1. lift to final ticket
2. self-order more likely to order ancilliary items
3. End of meal it is all timing. You have to catch the moment.
Shen: Yeah. I will add,in addition to McDonald’s,Wendy’s announced earlier this year that they would install kiosks at about 1,000 of theirlocationsby the end of this year. They’ve cited similar things that we’ve talked about, reducing labor costs, for example. But on the Panera side,Panera 2.0, some things management has said that I think make it really interesting, in terms of the lift inticket size that you can get from thesekiosks, there is a quote from,I don’t know if it was somebody in their management, but I found this quote that basically said, “People who order at a kiosk will generally spendabout twice as longordering with that kiosk than they doif they’re speaking directly to a cashier.” What that ultimately means or leads to is moreopportunities for upselling –every time you place an order for a salad,do you want to pair that with a soup? Youorder a coffee, do you want to pair that with a donut? Then, they’re able to customize their orders, and ultimately get larger tickets. Domino’s has spoken to this as well with their apps. Peopleupsell themselves. When they’re ordering a pizza, they add things to it that they wouldn’totherwise if ordering by the phone.
Re: Chilis at the table
Shen: And a lot of restaurants that have outfitted their tables with these tablets have found that people are more likely to order the ancillary items, higher instances of customers ordering dessert, coffee, other drinks. Those are all nice margin boosters for those businesses.
Kline: There’s a window. If you’re arestaurant, there’s a period between the end of dinner and the feeling of fullness when people will buy dessert. They often regret desert by the time it shows up. That’s why most restaurants have a to-go container for desserts you shouldn’t have ordered. But if the waitress is too busy or misses that window, orI would have had another beer if she got to me 10 minutesinto my meal, but at 20 minutes into the meal I’m like, “Oh,I’m driving too soon,” or, “MaybeI don’t need to spend this money.” So there’s an amazing ability to give meevery impulse if I’m sitting there and finish my gin and tonic and want another one,I just hit the button and there it comes whereas if I had that extra five minutes ofreflection, maybe I would go, this is a bad idea.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 26, 2018 — Swyft, Inc. announced the strategic acquisition of Utique, Inc., a high-tech US automated retail technology company. The cash and equity transaction enables Swyft to deploy new technology into its platform and buil
Source: www.vendingmarketwatch.com
"Utique is a synergistic technology company that further adds functionality and efficiency into our automated retail product," said Lincoln Smith, Swyft’s VP Product & Marketing. "With the acquisition comes an exceptional user experience in high-end consumer retailing."
Utique was awarded the "Best New Airport Retail Concept in North America" by ACI, the "Gold Innovation Award for Best Store Design" by NAMA, and was named to McKinsey & Company’s "Ones to Watch in Retail" report.
The acquisition also strengthens Swyft’s growing portfolio of patented inventions by adding ten (10) granted US patents. Utique’s technology includes mechanical patents, a back-end management system patent and user experience and lighting patents. One patent builds on Swyft’s own filings for use of vending machines as distributed micro-warehouses for e-commerce delivery.
The case, titled Magee v. Coca-Cola Refreshments USA, was brought by Emmett Magee, a blind man from Louisiana who invoked the ADA in suing Coca Cola because its glass-front vending machines made it impossible for him to know what product he was choosing and at what price. He was thwarted buying soda from vending machines at a hospital and a bus station.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit turned away his claim, ruling that vending machines are “not a physical place open to public access” and therefore don’t fit the definition of “public accommodations” that are required to abide by the ADA. It also said that the hospital and the bus stations were public accommodations and “may very well” bear some responsibility to make vending machines on their premises accessible to the disabled.

Here is a personal opinion letter/piece that I wrote for rebuttal to Andy Puzder and Rensi. I was deliberately ruthless and demonstrative for effect. I also sent to the Washington Post and may send to some more. I also published as personal letter on the Kiosk industry group site.
While c-stores have been in the touchscreen food-ordering kiosk game for more than a decade, it is by far the quick-service restaurant industry that is currently leading the charge into the future with food kiosks. Wendy’s embarked on plans to install self-ordering kiosks in about 1,000 of its U.S. franchises at the end of 2017. In January 2018, McDonald’s confirmed plans to add touchscreen ordering kiosks to half of its U.S. restaurants by the end of 2018.

As disruption across channels continues, due to Amazon’s on-going innovation, changing consumer demands and rapidly developing technologies, many channels are turning to kiosks to manage labor costs, introduce new value-added services and increase speed of service.
From food to self checkout to product pickup to financial, DMV (department of motor vehicles) and key copying services, kiosks have the ability to provide services efficiently and can also create an experience for shoppers using new technologies.
