Retail Systems – Shoplifting & Fraud Costs Retailers $44B

Retailers got hurt from two directions last year: When they weren’t getting straight-up robbed, they were being defrauded from within. And it all contributed to industry losses totaling $44 billion for the year.

Employee/internal theft contributed to 34.5 percent of shrink, followed by administrative and paperwork errors at 16.5 percent, then vendor fraud or error at 6.8 percent. Bringing up the rear in the categories contributing to retail shrink in 2104 was unknown loss at 6.1 percent.

Telehealth Kiosks: HealthSpot: Rethinking the Retail Experience

To accompany our Healthcare Informatics 100 list of the largest companies in U.S. health information technology every year, we like to give readers a heads-up on some fast-growing companies that could very well make the HCI 100 in years to come.

Good writeup on Cashman and HealthSpot.

Many healthcare IT startups have a personal healthcare story behind them. The Dublin, Ohio-based HealthSpot is one of those. Five years ago, Steve Cashman, a successful IT entrepreneur, took his daughter to a CVS mini-clinic with swimmer’s ear and was then sent to an urgent-care clinic, and neither experience was great, he says. The process got him thinking about the whole ecosystem of telehealth, retail pharmacies and health systems.

“I started thinking about what was driving these retail guys to put healthcare services in their stores and yet none of them could take care of this simple situation my family had,” recalls Cashman. “So I was interested in how you get the quality of the health system into a retail store and combine those worlds. It led us on a journey to create software to could facilitate remote visit with managed devices.”

MOODY, AL (WBRC) –

A new part of the Moody Library is the first of its kind in the state.

A free standing kiosk is designed to put everything you need to know about the county extension in one easy-to-access place.

“We went to topics and then we went to these titles and resources and we just looked at stuff that looked interesting,” 13-year-old Lindsey Richardson said about the new kiosk.

The fact that she is even looking at the kiosk is exactly what extension coordinator Lee Ann Clark had in mind.

“I run into people every day that they have no clue what extension is and that bothers me and so I am always thinking of ways that I can get the word out about what all we have to offer,” Clark said.

At the kiosk, you have access to the hundreds of programs available to you and funded through Alabama A&M and Auburn University.

Smart Safe Case Study

A woman stands in a room near a money counting machine on a table. She wears a gray shirt and jeans, appearing focused on her task. The space features shelves, a fan, and a smart safe adding security to the setup.

ArmorSafe and OptConnect Case Study

Transcript:

The idea most people begin within they think they need to get a safe is to protect against external theft. Increasingly the threat is actually also internal theft.

The hallmark of a smart safe is the inclusion of bill validators which count and validate that the currency is in fact good. The safe will sign a date timestamp to the transaction keeping track of which employee deposited the money and when they did

Basically eliminates the opportunity for internal cash theft.

Getting your data is as important as a safe itself working.

Using ArmorSafe with the OptConnect modem is just beautiful synergy.

Even over a wired network there’s still room for concern about running that cat5 cable from the safe and over to the router onsite.

The OptConnect plugs into the safe and then it creates its own cellular data network that is secure.

Physically owning a smart save tells somebody you are intelligently managing your cash.  You’re making it hard for the criminal to be a criminal.

So with Optconnect its more than just a supplier it is a partnership.

Contact OptConnect for more information.

Higi Expands its Network of Health and Wellness Kiosks

Telemedicine kiosks

Higi currently has stations in nearly 10,000 retail locations and averages over one million tests per week, serving 30 million people. According to the company, one in ten Americans have used a higi station to monitor their health and approximately 75% of the U.S. population now lives within 5 miles of a kiosk.”higi was founded on a simple but elusive idea: when individuals are empowered with their vital health stats (i.e., blood pressure, BMI, weight, pulse and body composition) and motivated through challenges and incentives, they make better decisions that lead to improved health outcomes,” said CEO Jeff Bennett in a statement. “We are very fortunate to have investors and a board of directors who share higi’s belief that small but meaningful steps can create lasting health habits.”In August, 2014, the startup merged with StayHealthy, a producer of affordable, medical-grade health monitoring devices, and formed the largest connected retail health kiosk network in the country. Since then, higi has added a mobile app and web portal, allowing users to easily collect, monitor, and share their health information. The secure platform also enables healthcare stakeholders to more efficiently engage with consumers and patients.”higi is a unique company because it understands and delivers on the promise that consumers who are empowered with their real-time biometric data often make better health decisions,” added William Wrigley, Jr., Chairman of higi.Source: chicagoinno.streetwise.co

Moki & Mimo Opportunities for Commercial Grade Tablet Kiosk

Moki(R) and Mimo Display(R) to Create New Opportunities for Tablet-Based Kiosk Solutions in Commerce.

Source: www.einnews.com

Moki, the leader in cloud-native management and control for tablet-based commerce solutions, announced today a strategic partnership with Mimo Monitors (Mimo Display, LLC). Headquartered in Princeton, NJ, Mimo Monitors produces affordable commercial-grade, Android™-based tablet devices and related POS peripherals, such as 2d barcode scanners, and credit card readers, etc., that come deployment ready with VESA-mountable displays.

This new partnership will combine Moki’s tablet-based kiosk control capabilities and Mimo’s robust devices to provide those in the retail and corporate spaces an affordable and fully-managed commercial-grade option for deploying large fleets of tablet-based kiosks and displays. Rather than turning a consumer grade tablet running iOS, Windows or Android into a tablet kiosk using enclosures, retailers can now purchase a low-cost device that is purpose-built to withstand the day-to-day rigors demanded from a tablet-based kiosk or display in a retail or other setting. Customers can also expect a managed hardware and software refresh cycle to allow for long term deployments.

Hospitality kiosk – Caesars Introduces Kiosks in Las Vegas

Guests checking into select Las Vegas hotels can now bypass the counter and check into their room without having to wait in line or interact with a human.

Earlier this month, Caesars Entertainment announced the launch of the first fully-integrated self check-in program in Vegas at The LINQ Hotel & Casino, Flamingo Las Vegas, and Caesars Palace.

The program utilizes kiosks that allow guests to swipe their ID and payment card in exchange for a printed room key. If the room isn’t ready, users will receive an alert via email when it becomes available, at which point they can return to the kiosk to claim their key.

Caesars called it the “latest stage in a technology solution to completely automate the check-in process,” with the goal being to reduce lines and cut down on guests’ wait times.

In a statement, Caesars Entertainment’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Tariq Shaukat said “the launch of self check-in now joins the ranks of already successful innovation for our resorts such as eKey keyless entry at The Cromwell and our ‘play by Total Rewards’ app.”

Much like similar kiosk setups at airports and rental car offices, the new technology will undoubtedly simplify the check-in and check-out process for guests. However some are likely to still feel more comfortable interacting with hotel staff at the front desk. For now, that option remains.

Looking ahead, Caesars plans to install the self-check-in kiosks at each of its other five Las Vegas hotel-casino resorts — including Planet Hollywood and Rio — later this year.

HIMSS 2016 Healthcare Kiosk WrapUp

I have yet to write my wrap of NRF things have been so busy, but HIMSS is the monster show for healthcare and maybe for all shows come to think of it (excepting Comdex a long time ago and now maybe CES). So onto the highlights, from the perspective of self-service kiosks.

CTS Healthcare has been and is the leader for sure in hospital patient check-ins (20 million and counting) and CTS Healthcare announced new middleware software for connecting EMR/EHR to self-service terminals, kiosks and tablets. Kwerk. Subscription basis which makes it affordable. Expect to see new tablet deployments with this. Also high brite screens (courtesy Panel Brite!).

Next up — Slabb showed a brand new unit which incorporates the BNR (or SCR/SC/VNR) from Crane. Pretty impressive. These units open up a brand new vending and an emerging cash ROI equation. The BNR accepts and recycles up to 4 denominations so it is able to offer all the advantages of cash and minimizes the impact (cash collection e.g.).

Related — Clearwave was there and showed new Posiflex XT unit. Bit of a departure for them.

Lilitab – was at the show for the first time. Lilitab engineers and designs tablet systems and they are extremely successful. They also have very large retail clients such as Sephora and I believe Panera (thousands of units).

Olea. And finally the engineering highlight of the show was Olea which introduced a new adjustable movable head (press the VeronaAnimated_Fina_smallerlbutton) to raise and lower the head of the unit. Will probably come in handy for fast food drive thrus as well I would think. Great job Frank and Traci! It’s pretty scary and difficult implementing adjustable head, and this is first indoor patient check-in with electronic adjustability.  To be clear this is terrific engineering. Press of the button and the head unit descends for ease of use by handicapped.

Couple of other notes. This year I did not see Phreesia at the show. They usually are but not this year for some reason.  Vecna was there however they were focused on their VGo telepresence robot.  I wish I could have seen it.

HIMSS is huge. Bigger than NRF I think. Healthcare is making the transition to self-service and genuine patient engagement.  The recent advances in telemedicine and telehealth offer additional evidence. I only wish Peyton Manning had announced his retirement during his talk. There are page entries on all of these units with show floor pictures if you didn’t make the show.

Digital Signage Solution, Touch Screen – DSE Wrap

kiosk tradeshow

Digital Signage Expo (DSE) iheld at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas says it is the world’s largest and longest running conference and trade show exclusively dedicated to showcasing innovative digital communications for customer- and employee-facing organizations.

From all the reports (listed below in pictures and comments) the show beat expectations.  The show may have been a hair smaller than last year (we are still getting numbers) but the impressions of the leads (who cares about anything else.. 🙂 is that it was very worthwhile.  The Self-Service Pavilion did not sell out and towards the side and somewhat disappointing but changes for next year include tripling the size of it and placing it in center of floor.  Several prominent companies have already signed up the best booths there for 2017 (22Miles & Premio example given).

This inaugural year for us to support DSE there were several members at the show including Olea, OptConnectURway, Parabit, DynaTouch, KioWare and Unattended Card Payments. And DSE this year launched the Self-Service pavilion which were 12 modular booths 5×7 and completely turnkey. URway and UCP participated in those booths.  215 exhibitors total for the show in 2016.

For 2017 they’ve moved the SSP in the center of show and have expanded it to 24 of the turnkeys + a couple of large booths. Coming into the show you still run the “gauntlet” of LG, Samsung and NEC.  Four Winds has moved up and also LG-MRI.  The entire show is larger in 2017 though I see 98 exhibitors signed up (which is good).

Below in images, videos, links and text are points of interest as they say for the show that we saw.

Excerpt from Daily Dooh

Walking the floor on the first day of #dse2016, one of the first things we’ve noticed is the total absence of Christie, which most years stands out with a major booth and often has its products and partners front and centre.

Combined with the fact that Scala doesn’t have its own booth – although is visible with various partners and CEO Tom Nix is very much present, and NanoLumens has only a meeting room (although more on that later), the show seems somewhat smaller this year.

Perhaps quieter, too, although that may be because, even though there are some very nice individual products, everybody is offering 4K so nothing has yet – I stress yet – struck me as the ‘next big thing’.

We’ve heard people say that the show seemed quieter this year, heard others say that they hadn’t yet found what they’ve been looking for, while we’ve heard more wax enthusiastically about the show being really great and that they’re doing lots of business. Guess it just depends what you are looking for!

So let’s go see what day two brings!

Four Winds Interact

From Leah Saugen with FWi – We had a fantastic show and the traffic was non-stop! We debuted FWI’s Mobile Workforce and had the opportunity to share this with a large number of attendees. We also showcased all of our latest and greatest applications and hosted several demo’s at our new demo bar. We captured literally hundreds of new leads (people we hadn’t previously had contact with) and met with several of our current customers and contacts.

Here is another one that shows units that friend of mine did for 22Mile

Comments on the Show from DynaTouch

Hey Craig,

Sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet up at DSE – you probably mentioned that you had decided to opt out, and it was me that forgot!

Thanks for the suggestions.  We had a good visit with Louise Janeway, Rob Chilcoat’s UK colleague, and I’m following up with Rob post show.   And a great visit with Ed Crowley, too – he still has a lot going with URway, EuroTouch and OneSource Interactive.  Definitely a good time talking about the good old days and acquaintances.

Saw some interesting stuff from Actineon, Shuttle and Advantech.  And Elo with their new EloView software.

We were demo’ing our stuff in Olea’s booth, next to KioWare.  Very interesting show, and VERY well attended.  Overall a good experience.  Glad we went.
