GDPR Update – EU GDPR General Data Protection Regulation

It’s 63 days from going into full enforcement mode. Best to be aware if based in US and doing business in EU.

Source: www.eugdpr.org

The EU is just about ready to turn on their information privacy laws. Typically the US uses the EU as baseline and tries to “harmonize”. Given the Facebook debacle I suspect there might be a bit more impetus given to that effort. Safe to say the US is still a bit of the Wild West (except for HIPAA). If you do business internationally best to be aware.

Why Did Toys ‘R’ Us Fail?

It was not the market dynamics that took these companies under, it was the fact that their owners took on so much debt that it positioned them to only be successful if all the market dynamics went their way.  They decided to purchase a Formula One race car and forgot they have to dodge potholes on I-94 in Chicago to and from work. And when they fail the world wonders and laments the loss of these retailers and make it sound like this is an overall retail issue.  It’s not.

Source: www.ihlservices.com

Judging from the usual apocalytic headlines it is pretty easy to assume Retail has been officially terminated by a mobile phone and Amazon.  If you look at the numbers for retail it shows a $5 Trillion market is growing at 5.4% year to year. But this is bad news?

McDonald’s Kiosks – tech updates have some workers jumping ship

For Dudley Dickerson, the mobile-app orders were the last straw.
McDonald’s has been updating with new technology, delivery, a revamped menu and curbside pickup. But the “Experience of the Future” has employees handling more tasks — in many cases, they say, without pay raises or adequate staffing. So Dickerson, 23, handed over his spatula for the last time.
“They added a lot of complicated things,” Dickerson said in an interview. “It makes it harder for the workers.”
Many fast-food employees hop from job to job. But with unemployment so low, turnover is becoming a problem. Workers are walking rather than dealing with new technologies and menu options. The result: Customers will wait longer.

“Quick-service restaurants are having a little more trouble with job openings and finding workers,” said Michael Harms, executive director of operations at People Report. “It’s the pace of work, the pace of technology and the lower wage rate.”

Habit to Test Breakfast, Develop App, Kiosks | Orange County Business Journal

Habit Restaurants Inc. (Nasdaq: HABT) in Irvine will test breakfast menu items and develop a digital mobile app and a kiosk ordering system.

Source: www.ocbj.com

Other restaurant groups—including Irvine-based Yogurtland—have looked at the meal segment as well, as a way to get more customers through the door while morning-intensive chains such as Starbucks Corp. made a mirror-image bid to bring customers back for lunch.

Bendel also told analysts the burger house will develop a mobile app to “allow our customers to skip the line and place their order from their mobile phones or tablets,” in a move that also brings Habit in-line with other chains.

Habit is also “developing a self-ordering kiosk to promote speed of service [and alleviate] cashier labor.”
