Montco gets five MindKare Behavioral Health Kiosks

The MindKare kiosk is a freestanding computer station with an interactive display screen that provides users with a quick and easy way to check on their mental and behavioral health. The kiosk asks users to take an online self-assessment, and provides information on mental and behavioral health conditions along with resources for local treatment options. The kiosk screens for conditions such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

The HealthSpark Foundation, which formerly operated as the North Penn Community Health Foundation based in Colmar, Pa., is providing about $60,000 for the purchase, installation and related training for MindKare kiosks at five locations in Montgomery County. HealthSpark launched the initiative in a partnership with Screening for Mental Health Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Wellesley Hills, Mass., and the Philadelphia-based Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation.

Russell Johnson, Spark Foundation’s president and CEO, said too often health assessment by primary-care doctors focuses on the neck down.

“There another part of the body that needs attention as well,” he said. “We know that early intervention for mental and behavioral health disorders is critical.”

Thin Client Kiosk – Owning a thin client in two minutes

RT @m3g9tr0n: Pwning a thin client in less than two minuteshttps://t.co/Y9FK57uVy2Source: blog.malerisch.netNormally, HP ThinPro OS interface is configured in a kiosk mode, as the concept of a thin/zero client is based on using a thick client to connect to another resource. For this purpose, a standard user does not need to authenticate to the thin client per se and would just need to perform a connection – e.g. VMware Horizon View. The user will eventually authenticate through the connection. The point of this blog post is to demonstrate that a malicious actor can compromise such thin clients in a trivial and quick way provided physical access, a standard prerequisite in an attack against a kiosk.

The Future Today: A Look at Smart Restaurant Technology

Smart Restaurant Technology

Recently, a few (very few) restaurants have begun offering a fully automated, Jetson-like food experience (think eatsa). The futurism is pretty cool, but what does today’s workpsmart restaurant technologylace automation really look like?

Source: www.foodabletv.com

Excerpt:  “At a bank, you can opt for traditional teller service, an ATM, a drive-thru, or online/mobile banking. Restaurants are doing the same by offering traditional counter service, ordering kiosks, touchscreen/video drive-thru, as well as online/mobile ordering. All orders are funneled to production for fulfilment and real-time inventory management,” explained Tommy Woycik, founder and president of Nextep Systems, whose tagline is “Order Food Faster.”

More advice and thoughts from Woycik

  • Automation of the ‘simple’ tasks like order entry and counting change provides improved speed-of-service and more value to guests
  • Customer service means different things to different guests (e.g., Baby Boomers versus Gen X versus Gen Y)
  • Customer service doesn’t have to be face-to-face .
  • All guests value food quality, order accuracy, and speed of service.

Marijuana kiosk – the next self service revolution?

Marijuana Kiosk Next Self Service Revolution

Source: kioskmarketplace

Excerpt:

The effort to legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational usage has been long, but it is finally bearing fruit. Marijuana is legal for recreational use in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado and the District of Columbia.

However, banks refuse to deal with the marijuana industry because cannabis remains on the federal list of banned substances, and acquiring and processing payments for it could put a bank at risk for AML/KYC prosecution. As a result, legal marijuana businesses cannot accept debit or credit cards.

Cash-only status can be a security liability for businesses. However, some vendors are offering kiosk solutions to the payment problem.

Comments: They probably do not list the armored services. The normal ones cannot be used due to lack of insurance so a whole other group of self-insured cash carriers is evolving. The Jane kiosks are accepting cash and the models would seem to justify a cash recycling solution to further mitigate cash handling. Craig with Kiosk Industry Group.

The Olea Retail Kiosk Solutions

Olea’s retail kiosks offer large touchscreen and multi-touch screens that enable customers to easily customize multiple aspects of their desired products. For example, a customer may want to customize a pair of shoes, and could use the retail kiosk to easily swipe the screen to preview the different color options available.

Another  benefit of the “endless aisle” is customization.  Where multiple colors or styles are available for an item, retailers can stock a generic display unit on the shop floor, and if a customer would like to customize the color or style, they can do so via the retail kiosk, ordering the item of their choosing. This type interaction between brick and mortar retail and e-commerce is commonly referred to as omni-channel retailing, and has been proven to have a major positive impact on a retailer’s bottom-line ROI.

Editors Note:  when you use the word ROI (which isn’t a word) people think different things. Here is one point of view.

ROI Point of View

Take a company like Panera which is now offering customer driven ordering. Same-store sales growth for Panera and the results are incredibly strong. The last six quarters are up 16.1% (an average of over 8% each year) and continue to rise. Companies are now jumping on board to invest in Panera’s stock which is growing far higher than the industry average.  [as of April 2016 and figuring original forecast of $6.64 a share]

While more and more retailers offer experiential retail, VR, wearables and connected products offer unique interaction that, as of yet, is nearly untapped. More about Retail Kiosk

Retail tech – What’s now & next for digital technology in retail

Personally, I think 2014 was the year when the hype around digital technology in retail stores crested a wave.

Source: econsultancy.com

Excerpt:

Digital store fronts rapidly become ‘best practice’ on the high street

WHSmith, perhaps considered a rather traditional or whimsical retailer (given its 18th century roots, I don’t think that’s an insult), has recently announced plans to introduce digital screens to 100 store fronts.

The 55-inch screens will promote Smith’s products as well as displaying third-party advertising.

When Graham Charlton wrote about Primark’s giant video walls in 2013, the sight was pretty fresh on the high street. Now, any fashionable retailer knows that digital shopfronts are a must-have.

For all the beauty that a department store’s Christmas window display can bring, the ability to use video is a powerful way to attract footfall.

To put it another way, in 2016, the idea of receiving a delivery of posters, signage and point-of-sale material from head office every time a campaign or line changes feels increasingly outdated.

Case Study – Courthouse Bill Payment with MEI BNR

Three men stand outside, each in front of a grey kiosk labeled GENERAL. The first man is smiling, the second has arms crossed, and the third, holding something in his hand—perhaps a bill payment receipt—completes the scene in their casual attire.

A speedy way to pay your
speeding ticket

When General Payment Systems, Inc. (GPSI) made the move into courthouse payment systems, they needed a compact solution that focused on a number of criteria including efficiency and reliability.

The company found the perfect product thanks to an innovative cash recycler from Crane Payment Innovations. “We were moving into the court space and ultimately we wanted to find a way for traffic tickets and fines to be paid quickly,” said Chris Trujillo, Operations Manager at GPSI.Fundamentally, any product also had to be able to fit into a compact space, because, asMr. Trujillo states “courthouse lobbies are not big places and kiosks are traditionally large.”

The solution was the MEI BNR (Bank Note Recycler), a product with modular design and flexible architecture that Trujillo describes as ‘the complete package’. The recycler is installed in a
2ft x 2ft x 6ft kiosk which accepts check, money order, credit and debit card payments, and most importantly, accepts and pays change in cash.
bnr02
The MEI BNR is also suited for semi-protected outdoor environments – which is ideal for court-houses where indoor space is at premium and lobby hours are limited.

The MEI BNR accepts notes in all USD denominations and pays change in four ($1, $5, $10, $20) – in bundles of up to 15 bank notes. “Cash handling is vital to our business as it’s how we market ourselves,” Cheri Tuccelli, VP Operations, GPSI explains. “We needed a quick and efficient solution and with payments of
traffic and criminal fines we had the requirement of needing to give change. The BNR delivered on both these needs.”

The MEI BNR delivers significant ROI thanks to: reductions in float, shrinkage and labor; improved machine uptime; cashback functionality, and enhanced security.

The MEI BNR was designed to provide all of the cash handling ability of a human cashier with increased security and cash management benefits. GPSI estimates that the new kiosks
are able to carry out the workload of two other units.

The speed and efficiency of the kiosk reduces queuing and results in end-user-satisfaction.

GPSI was awarded the contract for courthouses across the entire state of California – something they do not believe would have been possible without the MEI BNR and the support they
received from Crane Payment Innovations.

Mr Trujillo said: “Without the MEI BNR there would be no court contracts for us; it is a vital part of our kiosks. The court itself benefits in a number of ways. Firstly, there is no cost to them
for our kiosks, as we make our money from the end user by charging a convenience fee. In addition there is less money spent on staff, more money received in the form of payments, and more staff hours to do other work.”

After a successful pilot where the performance of the product was well received by all, GPSI expects to triple the number of units over the next six months. “Since we have installed the
MEI BNRs, feedback has been 100% positive and any minor problems were resolved quickly and easily,” said Mr Trujillo. “Customers benefit from the reduced time to take the payment.
Before we installed our kiosks, it would take hours to make a payment with no other choice than to wait in line; now, customers can come during their lunch break and get in and out fairly quickly. We even have kiosks outdoors which are accessible 24 hours a day.”

In one month, the kiosks at the Kern County court handled more than 2,100 transactions totalling nearly $240k. Mr Trujillo said: “Installing the new kiosks means that court staff can be assigned elsewhere, reducing queues at payment windows and improving overall efficiency. At Kern Superior Court, they now close two hours earlier Monday to Thursday. Fridays are now a half day for the same reason. They have not lost any potential payments since the kiosks are still available even though there is no staff on duty. Throughout the county it is the same story.”

Thanks to the reliability, efficiency and compact size of the MEI BNR, GPSI was able to implement a 24-7 solution that is delivering time and cost savings all while enhancing the customer experience. It even has some folks saying “crime does pay.”

Fundraising Kiosks for Non-Profits

New blog entry on Olea Kiosks covering Fundraising kiosks for non-profits. Non-profits are a large percentage of kiosk deployers and they use a wide range of units from Fundraising, to survey kiosk, to donation kiosks and many more.

Excerpt from Olea Blog

We hear plenty about kiosks for commercial applications like retail, healthcare and hospitality, but what about leveraging the benefits of kiosks for not-for-profit endeavors? First, do not box in non-profit kiosks to the notion that they can only serve as

fundraising kiosks, because that greatly diminishes the full spectrum of the features and benefits that kiosks can offer non-profits. As with any commercial application, kiosks for non-profits can handle

  • Logistics
  • Human resource management
  • Memberships
  • Merchandising and more

Outsourcing certain tasks to automation affords non-profit personnel more time to focus on fundraising and building awareness.

Here are just a few examples of ways Olea Kiosk’s solutions can help your non-profit achieve its mission.

Fundraising Kiosks at Non-profit Events

A non-profit event fundraiser is like any enterprise: you must increase bottom lines for your stakeholders and one way to do this is to increase the average size of the donation from each attendee. Here are just a few ways fundraising kiosks can increase fundraising efforts.

Use pre-set donation amounts. We have seen in other articles how up-selling and cross-selling are key benefits when deploying kiosks. Quick Serve Restaurants (QSR) rely on QSR kiosks to increase average check size by recommending add-ons and related items. Your fundraising kiosk should be no different. Perhaps your average donation size is $27 and you aim to increase that average to $30. On your donation screen offer buttons for $30, $50, $75 and Other as the go-to options and guide donors towards the amounts you aim to achieve. The “other” option gives donors the option to donate less or more than the target, should they choose to.

Automation – Swyft Raises $3.5M Series A Financing

The original founder of ZoomSystems has funding for new endeavor which seems to be in the same space in many ways.

Source: finance.yahoo.com

Swyft was co-founded by Gower Smith, creator of the automated retail industry. “We are at the inflection point where automated retail is proven, however has not yet scaled. Just like when banks introduced ATMs, location numbers increased 10 times once independent manufacturers deployed low-cost machines. At ZoomSystems I quickly grew annual sales from zero to $100 million, but after handing off management, the company didn’t continue to lower capital cost to improve ROI. Our data showed that this was the key for scale to tens of thousands of locations and billions in revenue, which is our focus at Swyft.”

Fast Casual Marketing – What we get wrong when we talk about fast-food wars

You often hear that the likes of Chipotle are destroying the likes of McDonald’s. But it’s more nuanced than that.

Source: www.washingtonpost.com

Customer distribution between the chains and how they are siloed and also overlap. Chipoltes and Paneras example given.

imrs

As you can see, the analysis found that Chipotle had its highest customer overlap with Panera. It also shared more customers with Starbucks and Chick-fil-A than it did with fast-food Mexican joint Taco Bell.

Meanwhile, Taco Bell had its strongest overlap in customers with KFC. The particularly strong correlation between diners at these two restaurants may in part reflect the fact that the sister chains, both owned by Yum Brands, are often located geographically close together, sometimes in the same building.

But overall, you can see that, with the exception of some customer overlap between Taco Bell and Chipotle, fast-food restaurants and fast-casual restaurants are essentially siloed.

Here’s why that is important: Surely there are plenty of customers who have traded up from the fast-food standbys for pricier offerings from fast-casual restaurants that they perceive as healthier and fresher. But now that we’re deeper into the fast-casual boom and consumers have adjusted to this new restaurant landscape, it’s worth noting that they tend to stay exclusively in one dining lane.

Wendy’s Serves Up Big Kiosk Expansion As Wage Hikes Hit Fast Food

Wendy’s will make self-service ordering kiosks available to all of its franchises later this year as minimum wage hikes help market push labor costs.

Source: www.investors.com

6,000 plus restaurants getting selfservice kiosks. Adoption rests with the franchisees. Most have been raising prices. Most of minimum wage is phased in years from now and virtually unchanged in California.

  • New York went from 9.00 to 10.50 (on way to 15)
  • CA went to $10 this from $9.00
  • Company owned Wendy stores number is 5% of total stores.
  • Wage inflation seen at company stores is 5%
  • More customers hit bottom line at 3.6% same store sales increase for last quarter

Wendy’s President Todd Penegor said, “wage pressures have been manageable both because of falling commodity prices and better operating leverage due to an increase in customer counts. Still, the company is wary about both wage hikes and a possible recovery in commodity prices and is “working so hard to find efficiencies” so it can deliver “a new QSR experience but at traditional QSR prices.”

In addition to self-order kiosks, the company is also getting ready to move beyond the testing phase with labor-saving mobile ordering and mobile payment available systemwide by the end of the year. Yum Brands and McDonald’s already have mobile ordering apps.  See other stories on McDonalds Kiosks here on Kiosk Industry.

Outdoor kiosk – Outdoor interactive kiosks in Kansas City

Meridian, a leading manufacturer of outdoor kiosks, deployed a new outdoor kiosk model in downtown Kansas City last week in partnership with Smart City Media, according to a press release from Meridian. The interactive kiosks are part of Kansas City.outdoor kiosk

Source: www.digitalsignagetoday.com

The outdoor kiosks, located at Kansas City Streetcar platforms and throughout downtown, enable travelers to check the arrival time of the next streetcar, offer Kansas City locals and tourists access to city services, and display information about local restaurants, activities and events, the release stated.

“We’re extremely excited to be part of this transformative initiative; it’s a huge technological shift for Kansas City,” said Chris Gilder, CEO of Meridian. “We had just over three weeks to build, test and install the kiosks. A lot of things had to go right in order for that to happen, but we’re very happy with the outcome.”

Kiosk users can sync their smartphones to the kiosk with a mobile app to save and share information. For example, Kansas City Streetcar travelers might see an ad for dinner at a local restaurant. They are then able to pull that information onto their mobile device to access again at their convenience.

• Strengths maybe you are looking fabrication partner, maybe a custom design. Could be an outdoor. Companies have core competencies. Identify them and match with what you need.
• Quality hardware and software. Think of your project as a crucial surprise attack. Would you really want to use cheap bullets? Excusing the metaphor spend on the proof of concept and then frugalize/streamline the production…

NUTS AND BOLTS ADVICE

COMPUTERS –

Is it a consumer, business or industrial class unit? Business class is cheaper but they break down more often and their lifecycle is short. Solid state storage is affordable, more reliable, greener and by far the better option now. Cheaper business class PCs sound nice but for extended project they will go End Of Life. Managing images of a long project becomes a massive project unto itself.

Are the components industry approved stock components with certification labels and marks or are they piecemeal assembled and/or modified prior to integration? Does it have a UL sticker? Is the remote monitoring working, or are the devices just capable? Paper low and paper out are killers.

New Kiosk Software for Android Adds Knox Support & MDM

Android Kiosk Software Adds Knox Support and advanced MDM functions

KioWare has released a new version of KioWare for Android (Version 3.9) which moves KioWare significantly into the realm of MDM and adds new interactive digital signage features.   The full press release is found here:

http://www.sitekiosk.com/news.aspx?nid=275

Highlighting the relevant points

  • Adds some features specific to Samsung devices (via the KNOX Standard  SDK).
  • These features include more extensive physical lockdown (volume button, power button, usb/sd card restrictions etc)
  • Includes robust device management tools (remote reboot and application installation/content updating).

An additional feature for all Android devices (not just Samsung) android kiosk software – and this one is big for MDM purposes – is the ability to remotely reset and wipe a device.

From Laura Miller of Kioware, “the ability to remotely reset a device is a key feature for mobile device management. Combine remote wipe with some of the latest Samsung specific device features and the message is clear, ‘KioWare for Android is a strong option for mobile device management.’”

KioWare also added some interactive digital signage features that will allow users to click an individual attract screen page and either stay on that page OR navigate to a specific URL.  This will allow attract screens to navigate directly to multiple advertiser websites, if configured to do so.
