Cash Accessibility, Cash Free and Cashless Kiosks

We looking through the Target Center RFP and couldn’t help but notice that “cash” will not be a accepted. Welcome to the world of “Cash Free”, mobile phones and contactless cards. We wonder if swipe will be supported almost.

Given the sports teams that use the Target Center, they will have a “Court Cash” loyalty app.

The wallet is a feature within the team app that allows any fan the ability to pay for their food & beverage and retail purchases with their mobile phone. Forms of payment include a loyalty currency called ‘Court Cash’ which is issued by the team or fans can use a credit card stored within the team app wallet. POS must be able to:

    • accept app wallet payments via QR code scanning or rich checkout.
    • recognize when a fan is designated in the wallet as a member, half season member, and other segments to be determined in order to offer these groups the specific discount associated with their respective segment.
    • redeem from the wallet one-time coupons for designated items or for a one-time discount.
    • accept mobile orders for a choice of either pick-up or delivery.

The Service Provider must define and provide a POS solution that includes mobile, kiosk, and cash-free platform solutions to deliver on aforementioned omni-channel experience.

Cash2Card Option – Abstracting Cash

Maybe the Target Center given sports and entertainment events would be interested in converting those cash customers to TC customers.

Cash and Cashless – Smarter Control

Cash is going through a rough period we think though some of the new solutions where modern smart cash management is provided are very attractive.  Example is new Pyramid product shown on Stores and Shops.

Self-checkout systems are becoming increasingly popular. Their number has almost doubled in recent years. An important success factor for the acceptance of these solutions is the possibility to enable various payment options. Especially for small purchases such as bakeries, cafes, pharmacies or fast-food restaurants, retailers can still not do without offering a cash payment function for self-checkouts. The customer wants to be able to choose his payment method freely in order to complete his purchase as quickly as possible and without long waiting times. In order to allow the greatest possible flexibility in self-checkout, Pyramid Computer and CPI have developed an attractive and space-saving solution that enables cash and cashless payment at the same kiosk.

The kiosk component of the solution is based on the polytouch® flex21.5 from Pyramid Computer. The cash accepting kiosk solution accepts cash and dispenses activated and loaded Mastercards in the amount of funds inserted at the kiosk. This, coupled with the Today™ Mastercard program for cashless worker payouts, enables most businesses big or small to eliminate the reliance on cash.  With COVID-19 concerns surrounding cash, employees and employers want to eliminate the need to accept or dispense cash but do not want to alienate customers or turn away business. The kiosk will allow users to securely insert up to $1,000 in cash through a bill accepter, and in turn an activated and loaded Mastercard is dispensed.  The entire transaction is completely automated and takes on average 30 seconds to complete.

The Company is in discussions with multiple parties including large stadium venues, restaurants, large shopping centers and big box retailers.  Businesses may charge a small fee for the Mastercard, however some are electing to subsidize the transaction and deliver the service for free as the cost savings and safety factors of eliminating cash outweigh the nominal cost of the card.

Cash Point Of View from Industry

We use cash all the time. It is our preferred currency for pickup.  Having financial apps and payment on your phone will bite you sooner or later.  Of course even being a Marriott preferred member means getting data hacked periodically these days.

In any case our reference for cash and ATMs is the ATMIA. They have on their front page the standard Coronavirus update (did we mention quarantine fatigue?).

It’s an action plan and looks like lobbying is only going to ramp up.  Good idea we think. Looking thru the words we see phrases like “ATM Revival Plan” and “Cash Revival Plan”.

  1. Continue cashless bans campaign – mandatory acceptance of cash at retail outlets in USA, Europe, Canada, UK & Australia.
  2. Making the deposit of cash (notes and coins) at ATMs other than those of your own account provider.
  3. Relaunch cash’s top values, e.g. financial inclusion, ease of use, high trust levels.
  4. Improved cash management and logistics to reduce costs; more use of strong software is vital to reduce cost impact of any future virus lockdowns, and handle what might be a gradual and/or unpredictable return to normal usage.
  5. Develop global ATM Hygiene & Safety Protocol, with Best Practices; hand sanitiser at ATMs; keypad overlays; use of sanitising additives added to notes in manufacture; note cleansing within the ATM; pre-staging of transactions;
    message that contactless (cards or phones) cuts down some of the contact but keypad still needs to be used.
    2.1.1 Summary of finding of health authorities about safety of cash.
    2.1.2 Investigate relevance of cleaning technologies, including UV, etc.
    2.1.3 Pandemic Industry Response Best Practices (for future pandemics).

SEATTLE — You won’t have to worry about digging around for change the next time you’re at CenturyLink Field.

Starting Tuesday, all concession stands, retail, vendors/hawkers and on-site parking will only accept credit, debit and prepaid cards.

Those who don’t have a debit or credit card can use one of 10 cash-to-card kiosks around the stadium and event center where they can put in cash and get a prepaid card. You can load $1 to $500 on the cards and there is no transaction fee.

The prepaid cards can be used inside or outside the stadium, so those who have money left over on the cards after an event can use it anywhere major cards are accepted. The cards cannot be reloaded.

The box office will still accept cash.

Stadium officials said before the switch, 75 percent of purchases there were made without cash.

Cashless Restaurants – Sweetgreen Will Start Taking Cash

Washington, D.C.-based salad chain Sweetgreen will also start accepting cash again at all of its 94 locations by the end of the year following backlash cashless stores have faced for excluding people without credit cards or bank accounts, the company said last week.

‘Going cashless had positive results, but it also had the unintended consequence of excluding those who prefer to pay or can only pay with cash.’

We’ve made the decision to accept cash in all our restaurants nationwide by the end of 2019.

When we decided to go cashless it was based on our core value of win win win — the customer wins, the community wins, the company wins. We believed there were many advantages that would benefit the sg community, including employee safety — reducing incidents of robbery, sustainability — fewer armored cars and less paper, and efficiency — it would speed up service in our restaurants. If you want to read more about why we decided to go cashless, please read this article we published in 2016. Going cashless had these positive results, but it also had the unintended consequence of excluding those who prefer to pay or can only pay with cash.

Ultimately, we have realized that while being cashless has advantages, today it is not the right solution to fulfill our mission. To accomplish our mission, everyone in the community needs to have access to real food.

Cashless Stores Backlash – AP News

NEW YORK (AP) — Hembert Figueroa just wanted a taco.

So he was surprised to learn the dollar bills in his pocket were no good at Dos Toros Taqueria in Manhattan, one of a small but growing number of establishments across the U.S. where customers can only pay by card or smartphone.

Cash-free stores are generating a backlash among some activists and liberal-leaning policymakers who say the practice discriminates against people like Figueroa, who either lack bank accounts or rely on cash for many transactions.

Figueroa, an ironworker, had to stand to the side, holding his taco, until a sympathetic cashier helped him find another customer willing to pay for his meal with a card in exchange for cash.

“I had money and I couldn’t pay,” he said.

Protecting the Unbanked in Philadelphia

Philadelphia just became the first large city in the nation to ban cashless businesses in the city, in part to protect people like some construction workers who don’t have a bank or credit card.

Nearly 13 percent of Philadelphia’s population — close to 200,000 people — are unbanked, according to federal banking data. That’s more than double the regional average.

The Unbanked and Underbanked in Philadelphia

Last fall, a veteran lawmaker in PA introduced a bill outlawing cashless businesses — shops and restaurants where customers can only pay with credit and debit cards.

The Mayor of Philadelphia signed it into law last week, making Philadelphia the first big city in the country to ban cash-free stores. Beginning July 1.

The PA lawmaker thought it was discriminatory for businesses to turn away low-income residents who don’t have bank accounts, a population often referred to as the “unbanked” or the “underbanked.”

2017 FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households

The FDIC is committed to expanding Americans’ access to safe, secure, and affordable banking services. The FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households is one contribution to this end.

To assess the inclusiveness of the banking system, and in partial response to a statutory mandate, the FDIC has conducted the survey biennially since 2009.1 The most recent survey was administered in June 2017 in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, collecting responses from more than 35,000 households. The survey provides estimates of the proportion of U.S. households that do not have an account at an insured institution, and the proportion that have an account but obtained (nonbank) alternative financial services in the past 12 months. The survey also provides insights that may inform efforts to better meet the needs of these consumers within the banking system.

Estimates from the 2017 survey indicate that 6.5 percent of households in the United States were unbanked in 2017. This proportion represents approximately 8.4 million households.   Some other estimates put that number as high as 50 million. An additional 18.7 percent of U.S. households (24.2 million) were underbanked, meaning that the household had a checking or savings account but also obtained financial products and services outside of the banking system.

The 2017 survey examines a number of additional topics, including the methods that banked households used to access accounts, bank branch visits, use of prepaid cards, use of alternative financial services, saving for unexpected expenses or emergencies, use of credit, and the methods that households used to conduct financial transactions in a typical month.

Fast-casual places are ditching cash for safety and efficiency. Critics say this shuts out poor people, some immigrants and those who just prefer cash.

The global cashless movement has reached Washington, where a growing number of fast-casual establishments and other spots are saying no to greenbacks in favor of plastic and mobile payments. Sweetgreen, the national salad chain founded by Georgetown University graduates, went cashless in most of its locations last year. Other cashless spots include a Menchie’s frozen-yogurt shop downtown, the posh Barcelona Wine Bar on 14th Street NW and the Bruery beer store at Union Market.

Soon, they may be breaking the law.

The decision to go cashless also has broader implications in the global battle between the credit-card and ATM industries.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Visa has been a major booster of the cashless movement. The credit card company in March awarded 50 businesses $10,000 each for rejecting cash payments and has released reports touting the benefits of a cashless society.

Comments: This will be a very interesting fight over the next decade.  Governments obviously want no cash, as an all electronic economy means every transaction everywhere is known to it.

The push back due to the unbanked was quite predictable.  However, when you see a country like India has gone cashless in many spots — well, if they can figure out how to do it, we should be able to figure out how to do it.  I believe even poor countries in Africa have large cashless segments now.

This really is not a battle of if, but rather when.
