ChargeItSpot Adds Loyalty to Charging Stations

New line of phone charging stations incorporates card scanner feature allowing retailers to offer complimentary phone charging exclusively for loyalty members
Philadelphia, PA (…

Source: www.benzinga.com

The charging stations feature a built-in card scanner that enables complimentary phone charging as an exclusive benefit for loyalty card members. The technology also enables clients to collect and append opt-in data – like email addresses and phone numbers – from loyalty members.

Retailers and mall operators aren’t the only ones able to benefit from this next generation of charging kiosk. Casinos, stadiums, and any brand with a loyalty or membership program are prime targets for this new technology. The kiosks can also help drive new loyalty sign-ups. If a customer is not an existing loyalty member, the touchscreen will direct them to the nearest on-site location where they can sign up to become a member, and then get a free phone charge.

Virtual Concierge Kiosk – Ponzi scheme case

A Jupiter-based Virtual Concierge business was either a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 1,800 investors out of $81 million or it was a legitimate enterprise started by an innovator with a great idea.

Those were the two scenarios 14 jurors heard Tuesday in attorneys’ closing arguments in federal court in West Palm Beach.  Joseph Signore,…

The Signores’ company JCS Enterprises, and Schumack’s firm TBTI sold 22,547 kiosks to investors. The kiosks were to be placed at hotels and other venues to provide people information and coupons and allow them to access services such as remotely ordering food.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Carlton told jurors, “I told you this was a case about lying to people in order to get their money. I told you it was all one big fat lie.”

Carlton said the two “big lies” investors were told was that electronic kiosks they purchased for about $3,000 each would be placed in various venues such as casinos and that investors would receive $300 a month for 36 months from advertising revenue.

In reality, Carlton said, testimony during the trial that lasted over a month showed that only 182 of the Virtual Concierge machines were manufactured and only 84 were ever in operation. The company started in 2011 had a mere $21,000 in advertising revenues.

Higi Raises $40 Million to Expand Health and Wellness Kiosks

Higi currently has stations in nearly 10,000 retail locations and averages over one million tests per week, serving 30 million people. According to the company, one in ten Americans have used a higi station to monitor their health and approximately 75% of the U.S. population now lives within 5 miles of a kiosk.

“higi was founded on a simple but elusive idea: when individuals are empowered with their vital health stats (i.e., blood pressure, BMI, weight, pulse and body composition) and motivated through challenges and incentives, they make better decisions that lead to improved health outcomes,” said CEO Jeff Bennett in a statement. “We are very fortunate to have investors and a board of directors who share higi’s belief that small but meaningful steps can create lasting health habits.”

In August, 2014, the startup merged with StayHealthy, a producer of affordable, medical-grade health monitoring devices, and formed the largest connected retail health kiosk network in the country. Since then, higi has added a mobile app and web portal, allowing users to easily collect, monitor, and share their health information. The secure platform also enables healthcare stakeholders to more efficiently engage with consumers and patients.

“higi is a unique company because it understands and delivers on the promise that consumers who are empowered with their real-time biometric data often make better health decisions,” added William Wrigley, Jr., Chairman of higi.

Privacy & Beacons Coexist on Internet terminal?

The streets of New York City are one step closer to super-fast public Wi-Fi. LinkNYC, a public-private partnership between the city and a consortium of technology companies, has debuted its first two payphone-turned-tech kiosks in Manhattan. These gleaming aluminum “Links,” as they are called, contain Wi-Fi beacons, mobile device chargers and informational tablets that include an app allowing free phone calls to anywhere in the country. The city plans to roll out 500 more of them by July and to have at least 4,550 spread across the five boroughs by 2020.

Source: www.governing.com

That arrangement is leading some to raise questions about privacy. Ad space on the Links is so valuable because of the user information (including IP addresses, GPS location and browsing data) that allows advertisers to deliver highly targeted content to passersby. The back end works similarly to ad-targeting algorithms users encounter while surfing the Web.

The benefit of bill-payment kiosks

Next, you need to consider user security, since bill-payment kiosks deal with sensitive information. “At a minimum, this means your kiosk needs to meet EMV standards. Bill-payment kiosks need to have an EMV-certified payment system. This means that the data is encrypted from the moment the card is entered, through the kiosk, the gateway, the processor, and the vendor,” said Laura Miller, director of marketing, KioWare Software. In addition, you also need to keep your software and hardware up to date to close security loopholes.

One way to keep your kiosk secure is to use kiosk software to lock down the kiosk and prevent hackers from messing with sensitive data. “Kiosks need to be secured with kiosk software if they are going to be handling sensitive information, particularly of a financial nature. Anything else is a poor substitute that can put users and organizations at risk for data theft or leakage,” Miller said. “Kiosk software is built exactly for this purpose, with file download blocking, browser lockdown, clearing of private data, resetting the browser between users, and EMV-supported payment encryption to secure payment data.”

Bill-payment kiosks can provide great benefits to retail customers, as long as you keep the basics of availability, security and customer experience in mind.

Why Your Retail Business Needs A Kiosk Survey

Forget receipt surveys or email surveys, which only collect feedback well after the customer has left your store, and consider for a moment the advantages of capturing customer sentiment in the moment. Not only are customers more likely to remember the details of their experience, but you don’t have to rely on them to head home and plug in a survey URL.

Source: customerthink.com

Overall, the reasons to ditch receipt and email surveys and adopt kiosk surveys are plentiful. Kiosk surveys offer a more visually pleasing experience for the customer, and survey incentives like coupons or free gifts can be prominently promoted on the main screen.

It’s time to say goodbye to ugly web survey forms, and hello to beautiful iPad surveys. Your customers will thank you for it.

Coffee Kiosk McDonaldโ€™s counters Fight for $15 with automation

Calls for a minimum-wage hike nationwide and in Illinois are increasingly met with businesses’ use of technology to cut costs.

Source: www.illinoispolicy.org

The Fight for $15 campaign plans to target McDonald’s on April 14 as part of a new pre-Tax Day tradition, led by the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU.

Chicago is one of 300 cities worldwide where strikes and protests are scheduled. SEIU has spent $70 million on its Fight for $15 campaign. The union’s Local 73 represents more than 28,000 government workers in Illinois and Indiana.

Protestors may want to stop by the McDonald’s at Adams and Wells to meet their replacement – an automated McCafé kiosk.

The store, which is anticipating Chicago’s minimum-wage increase to $13 an hour by 2019, is testing out coffee kiosks in the restaurant instead of having employees serve it. The kiosk features a touch-pad for ordering and paying. The screen also prompts customers to answer questions about their kiosk experience, giving the impression this is something that could be adopted as an alternative to hiring. This kind of automation, which replaces a human employee with technology, is one of the unintended consequences of Chicago’s minimum-wage increase.

It may not just be a coffee machine either. Other McDonald’s locations have used self-service kiosks with touch-screens for paying. And while self-serve kiosks don’t seem too unusual, San Francisco-based Momentum Machines has created a robotic hamburger-making machine the company claims can produce 400 high-quality burgers in an hour with minimal human supervision.

The Future Today: A Look at Smart Restaurant Technology

Recently, a few (very few) restaurants have begun offering a fully automated, Jetson-like food experience (think eatsa). The futurism is pretty cool, but what does today’s workplace automation really look like?

Source: www.foodabletv.com

Excerpt:  “At a bank, you can opt for traditional teller service, an ATM, a drive-thru, or online/mobile banking. Restaurants are doing the same by offering traditional counter service, ordering kiosks, touchscreen/video drive-thru, as well as online/mobile ordering. All orders are funneled to production for fulfilment and real-time inventory management,” explained Tommy Woycik, founder and president of Nextep Systems, whose tagline is “Order Food Faster.”

“Automating the ‘simple’ tasks like order entry and counting change will allow restaurants to provide improved speed-of-service and more value to their guests,” Woycik said. “Customer service means different things to different guests (e.g., Baby Boomers versus Gen X versus Gen Y) and doesn’t have to be face-to-face (e.g., eatsa and drive-thru). All guests value food quality, order accuracy, and speed of service, which is what smart technology is improving.”
